How to find the best hashtags and keywords for your online business

Every time someone subscribes to my email list I ask them this question,

What one thing are you struggling with most when it comes to your online business?

There is one answer that comes up consistently.

It goes something like this:

  • How do I get in front of my target audience?
  • How do I reach mums online?
  • How do I get more followers on Instagram?
  • How do I get to the top of Google search?
  • How to get my website up there on the Google web rankings?

Can you spot what the underlying problem is?

You want to get found.

You want the right people, your target market and your audience, to SEE you online.

Sound familiar?

The good news is that there is something you can do right now to help your dream customers find out. You’ve probably heard it before, but I want you to really think about what this means. If you do this thoroughly, with real thought and empathy with your target customer, you’ll make instant progress.

I’ll tell you what it is, then I’ll show you how to do it right.

The most important thing to do in order to be found by your ideal customer is…

Choose your keywords wisely.

If you want to get to the top of Google search results – choose your keywords wisely.

If you want to get found on Instagram – choose your hashtags wisely.

If you want to get found on Pinterestchoose your board names and pin descriptions wisely.

You’re simply anticipating the exact words that your customer will be typing into the search bar.  Whether that be on Google, Instagram, Pinterest or any other social network.

OK, so now I’m guessing you want a nice quick shortcut that you can do right away. Am I right?!

And there is one.  But there’s a caveat, you need to know exactly who your ideal customer is first. Let’s assume you know her intimately for the sake of this ;0)

Now follow these four steps closely:

#1 Write out 5 words she’ll use to search for your (or similar) product/service. For example, if you’re a parenting coach, you customers might search for things like ‘how to discipline a toddler’ or ‘parenting’ or ‘family life’.

#2 Put these words and phrases into either of these sites:

Keyword.io (if you want to get found on Google or Pinterest).

Hashtagify.me (if you want to get found on Instagram).

#3 The tool will show you other similar words that your target market are using. Explore and find about 30.

#4 Record all the relevant words and phrases you find into a spreadsheet along with the volume of searches on Instagram or Google for each word/phrase.

Now you have a nice tidy research doc with all your keywords sorted by order of popularity. These are the words you will use to attract the right people to your blog or your social media content.

Use them in your blog posts to get found on Google.

Use them as your hashtags to get found on Instagram.

Use them on your Pinterest board names and pin descriptions to get found on Pinterest.
